At college, most of the courses that I am taking now are helping to prepare me for a career in the business world and also give me a better understanding of the world I live in today. My Quantitative Business Methods class is helping understand the mathematical aspect of being an accountant. In this class we cover probabilities, permutations and combinations which all deal with how likely a certain event is bound to happen based on the given odds. Although this class can be difficult at times, the theories and formulas that I have learned have proven to be very beneficial to me seeing as how I plan on being an accountant.

Another class that has helped better me as a person is my Race, Class and Gender class. Our professor has the class read articles that deal with racial, sexual, social status and gender issues and than we discuss them during class. Usually a topic is brought up and we have the class debate on whether or not it is just and what should be done about it. Different types of racism and sexism have been introduced to me in this class that I had never known about. The racism shown towards Asians and Hispanics and the extent of the sexism that women have had to deal with has opened my eyes to how people act around me. Now I am more aware of the people I see in my everyday life, and I am constantly watching their actions to see if they fit the profile of a racist or sexist.

The last class that has really improved my speaking skills as well as my knowledge of the business world is Speech and Communication. In this class, I have made powerpoint presentations to represent a company chosen at random, and explain to my peers why this company is important and why they should all spend their time and money at this place. Gathering the information to persuade my classmates was difficult but did not compare to the anxiety I felt when I had to get up to present to them. When it was my turn to present, I took a deep breath and talked in the most casual manner that I could. To my suprise, everyone loved my speech and had all learned something new. My teacher was very impressed and gave me a 97/100 on that speech. Here is an example of my most recent speech about Why America Should Release the Oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
