Welcome!

Hi, my name is DeFron Dominick and I am currently a full time student at Rider University. I am double majoring in accounting and finance and I intend to get my master's degree through the 5 year business program. I keep busy on campus as an executive leader of the On Fire: Literary Journal of the African Diaspora and I am an active member of the Latin American Student Organization, Black Student Union, Multicultural Student Leadership Institute and Volleyball Club. During my senior year of highschool, I interned at a real estate orriented accounting firm called KOR Companies and in the summer, I volunteered at my local homeless shelter, The Hoboken Shelter. I also tutored an 8th grader at my old school to prepare him for highschool. My main goal is to earn an internship with an accounting/finance firm.

The Essentials

Dear Viewer,

I am happy to see that you are taking the time to read my blog in order to learn more about me. So in order to show you who I am and not waste your time I have prepared this briefcase which encases all the essentials that you should know about me. In this briefcase, you will not find too many personal, eye watering stories about my past. Instead, you will find the achievements I have made for myself despite the problems I have had, and you will see how I am working hard to create a future in which I can live a happy and successful life. Even though I have never been especially gifted in any particular field, by working hard and staying determined I have managed to make up for that and have always found ways to achieve my goals. By the time you have seen everything inside my briefcase, I hope that you will have learned something interesting about me, and see how I have used my positive characteristics to improve myself as well as others.

Biography

To gain a better understanding of who I am and the environment that I have come from please review my Biography. I hope that you will see some similarities between your past and mind and be able to relate to me on a more personal level.

My Credentials

If you would like to see if I am qualified for an internship at your company than please review my resume which shows my previous employment history and my extracurricular activities. I have been very productive in the short time that I have been at Rider University. My proudest achievement is the poem that I wrote for the literary magazine, On Fire, titled Burning Brother. I had to present my piece at a poetry event that we held later in the week and although I was nervous, I stood tall and read my poem with pride to a crowd of one hundred people. I have a lot of patience with people and have been a successful tutor to a student who went to my old elementary school as well as good mentor to new interns at my previous employment. Not only was I able to learn the Accounts Payable system in a few weeks but I was also able to teach it to another intern during the last two weeks before I had to leave for college.

Community Service

After I joined LASO (Latin American Student Organization) I signed up to participate in an event known as The Midnight Run. During this event, the people that signed up had to meet on wednesday at 10 p.m. and take a one hour drive to New York City where they would deliver clothes and food to the homeless. The group would drive all over Manhattan, going from shelter to shelter to feed and cloth any homeless person we found to prepare him for the rough winter ahead. When I first signed up, I did not see too many names on the list and I was upset that the reason why a lot of people did not want to participate was because we would not be getting back to Rider until 2 a.m.

I understood that some people might have had an 8 a.m. class the next day but so did I and the other people that went that day, so I felt that more people should have gone to help the homeless. That day I met up with three friends of mine and when we got to New York and started handing people food and clothes, I think we all felt good. I definitely felt like I was making a positive change and that even though it was not a change that moved the world, it was change that was able to fill up someones stomach and keep him warm at night. By the end of the night, I was sad at the fact that I could not do more but went home feeling like I had accomplished something. The other members and I all had a blast on that trip and it is something that we will not soon forget.

Rider University

At college, most of the courses that I am taking now are helping to prepare me for a career in the business world and also give me a better understanding of the world I live in today. My Quantitative Business Methods class is helping understand the mathematical aspect of being an accountant. In this class we cover probabilities, permutations and combinations which all deal with how likely a certain event is bound to happen based on the given odds. Although this class can be difficult at times, the theories and formulas that I have learned have proven to be very beneficial to me seeing as how I plan on being an accountant.

Another class that has helped better me as a person is my Race, Class and Gender class. Our professor has the class read articles that deal with racial, sexual, social status and gender issues and than we discuss them during class. Usually a topic is brought up and we have the class debate on whether or not it is just and what should be done about it. Different types of racism and sexism have been introduced to me in this class that I had never known about. The racism shown towards Asians and Hispanics and the extent of the sexism that women have had to deal with has opened my eyes to how people act around me. Now I am more aware of the people I see in my everyday life, and I am constantly watching their actions to see if they fit the profile of a racist or sexist.

The last class that has really improved my speaking skills as well as my knowledge of the business world is Speech and Communication. In this class, I have made powerpoint presentations to represent a company chosen at random, and explain to my peers why this company is important and why they should all spend their time and money at this place. Gathering the information to persuade my classmates was difficult but did not compare to the anxiety I felt when I had to get up to present to them. When it was my turn to present, I took a deep breath and talked in the most casual manner that I could. To my suprise, everyone loved my speech and had all learned something new. My teacher was very impressed and gave me a 97/100 on that speech. Here is an example of my most recent speech about Why America Should Release the Oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

My Heart is OnFire!!

Although I participate in many clubs at Rider University, the one that I enjoy the most and feel that I do the most work in is the OnFire: Literary Journal. This amazing club that was put together by a hardworking sophomore who has become a good friend of mine, Rance Robeson, allows me to express myself in the best way that I know how, Poetry. At the beginning of each meeting, we start off by listening to music that rhymes in different ways. Sometimes the song will tell a deep story that is hidden in its words, while some songs get straight to the point and focus more on making sure that each line is catchy and interesting. After we listen and discuss the song, we each write a short poem and have it edited and reviewed by our peers. At the end of the meeting, our poems are handed back and we close with a list of the events that we will be having within the month.

We have held many events throughout they year including The Poetry Special where we had Iyaba Mandingo, a famous competition winning poet, come and read some of his poems as he painted a self portrait. We have also had a writing workshop where we had a professor from Rutgers University come down and help us work on our poems and writing skills. The professor that came down was a very intelligent woman who improved my writing tremendously. The last event that we held was the Journal Premiere where I was able to present my poem and listen to my peers read their great pieces. Many people came down to see the journal premiere and it turned out to be a huge success. The best part of being an executive leader in the club is that we all bond and treat each other like family. Towards the end of the semester, the board members took a trip to New York City to see a poetry slam and since it was my first time I was greatly looking forward to it. That night was one of the best nights of my life as I listened to people read poetry in a way I had never heard of before. OnFire has improved my character greatly and helped me become more sociable with other people. This is a club that I will always hold dear to my heart and plan to be a part throughout all of my years at college.
